The Bruichladdich distillery in Islay, Scotland is one of the most renowned Scotch whisky producers in the world. Since the distillery’s reopening in 2001, they have been producing some of the most sought-after single malts in the world of whisky — most notably their Octomore and Port Charlotte lines along with the unpeated Classic Laddie.
Bruichladdich recently announced the addition of the Luxury Redefined series to its robust portfolio. These 18 and 30-year expressions showcase some of the best liquid the legendary distillery has produced. The 18-year-old expression, which Bruichladdich was kind enough to share with us, is distilled from barley grown on Islay, and then aged 18 years in ex-bourbon barrels on the island. Let’s see how luxurious this whisky actually is.
Tasting notes
The aroma of the Bruichladdich Eighteen is thick, dense, and completely singular. The first thing that comes to mind is buttered popcorn. It’s buttery and sweet with notes of salted caramel and a wisp of peat smoke. On the palate, the briny influence of the peat smoke is far more present, while the caramel corn slips into a supporting role. A bit of tart, green apple pops on the back end with a gentle baking spice rounding things out. The mouth feel is substantial and the finish zeroes in on a briny, smoky note that transports the drinkers to the Hebridean seaside.
Final thoughts
Fans of Bruichladdich’s other whiskies will not be disappointed by the Bruichladdich Eighteen. Its buttery, creamy aroma and flavor are beguiling in the best way. The combination of fresh orchard fruit, buttered popcorn, saltwater taffy, and caramel with a hint of salty peat smoke just hits the sweet spot for me. Best of all, the Bruichladdich Eighteen truly breaks new ground for the distillery. Its flavor profile is noticeably distinct from the Octomore, Port Charlotte, and Black Art lines. As much as I truly enjoy this whisky, I don’t think it’s going to have a broad appeal among novices or drinkers with more money than taste. This is a whisky for people who love special and unique drams above all else.
