Tequila Ocho is known for doing things a bit differently in the tequila world. Their expertly crafted, single-estate bottlings of blanco and aged tequilas are what the distillery is best known for, but among agave enthusiasts, Tequila Ocho Puntas is the star of the lineup. To craft Puntas, co-founder of Tequila Ocho, Carlos Camarena, makes a very specific cut during the distillation process, taking the last bit of the heads, and the first portion of the hearts to craft this high-proof, full-flavored tequila. Let’s find out if Tequila Ocho’s Puntas is worth the hype.
Tasting notes
For being a higher proof than most tequilas, Ocho Puntas doesn’t have much ethanol heat on the nose. It’s fragrant and fresh with notes of roasted agave, fresh lemongrass, and lime. On the palate, the aroma of lime shifts to fresh lime zest and is joined by fresh green bell pepper. A burst of freshly cracked black peppercorn with a hint of cinnamon hits the back palate and carries through the finish while notes of cooked agave and lime carry the taste home.
Final thoughts
Fans of Tequila Ocho already know that Carlos Camarena doesn’t mess around and Ocho Puntas is no exception. This is a full-bodied, full-strength tequila that embraces everything that makes unaged tequila special. The fresh, fragrant aromas and flavors make this tequila drink a bit lower than its proof may suggest. Any fan of agave spirits will find something to enjoy here.
