Sloe Gin Fizz

The Sloe Gin fizz was first published in an 1898 edition of Sunset Magazine as a warm weather refresher. Sunset Magazine which began in 1898 was established by the Southern Pacific Railroad as a means of combating the “Wild West” Stereotype to entice people to come out to California. The Sunset Limited was the premier train on the Southern Pacific Railroad’s Sunset route which ran between New Orleans and San Francisco. The Magazine was available at the station and on the train.

As you can see there is no egg white in this recipe and it’s important to note that the first fizzes were more like what we think of as a Collins today, a lemon sour lengthened with Soda (hence the fizz), it’s important to note that eggs and egg whites were added to cocktails and alcohol drinks all through history and while some Gin Fizzes were made by simply adding soda to a sour, some were also made using egg white as in the Silver Fizz and Ramos Gin Fizz both of which were prevalent in the “Golden Age Of Cocktails” which was from the 1860’s to the 1920’s. Which came first is a chicken or an egg issue, it’s very possible that all of these drinks existed and emerged around the same time and really just relied on the maker. Things then were much less defined than they are now, but they didn’t have the internet or travel as fast as we can so information was much slower and also these issues seemed to be less important than we regard them anyway. So there’s that. Hope you guys enjoy the drink, sorry for the simplistic explanation in the video, but if you’re reading this you got all the info anyway!
