Satan’s Whiskers

Although the Satan’s Whiskers cocktail probably first made it’s way into print in Harry Craddock’s Savoy Cocktail Book published in 1930, it’s actually credited to a bar called The Embassy Club in Los Angeles. The Embassy Club was run by a Restauranteur/Playboy named Adolphe “Eddie” Brandstatter who was probably the most famous of his day. Basically he was like Wolfgang Puck, and through his career catered to Hollywood’s Elite. One of the most famous places he established, Café Montmartre on Hollywood and Highland was described as “the center of Hollywood Life…”

Although Prohibition was in full force during Brandstatter’s day, he didn’t think any of this clientele should go without. Most patrons would bring a hip flask with them and a “distiller” would be on site to top them off during dinner. The opening of the Embassy Club in 1929 was a catastrophe for Brandstatter and marked the beginning of a long rough patch. Like many in his day Brandstatter came to an untimely end, but his influence is undeniable.
