The Caribbean island of Martinique is known globally for the production of rhum agricole. This legally protected designation applies specifically to rums made in the French Caribbean that are distilled from fresh cane juice instead of molasses. Founded in 1845, Rhum J.M. is one of the best-known producers of rhum agricole in Martinique. Their newest release, the Rhum J.M. Terroir Volcanique, is aged for three years in two types of deeply charred new American oak barrels crafted at Rhum J.M. ‘s onsite cooperage. Does this unique barrel aging technique make a big difference? Find out below.
Tasting notes
This richly golden-hued rum has an aroma of caramel, dried fruit, nutmeg, and cinnamon. The flavor is round and fruity, with a caramel-like sweetness. There is also a slightly smoky, roasted oak note that really gives this rum an interesting depth of flavor. The finish is fruity and heavy with baking spice and more of the caramelized sweetness.
Final thoughts
This rhum agricole is complex, flavorful, and surprising. The unique barrel aging process takes the fresh, grassy base of rhum agricole and gives it rich oaky notes that border on high-end cognac or bourbon. Rhum J.M. Terroir Volcanique is a fantastic spirit that lovers of fresh cane rums will undoubtedly enjoy, but it has a clear crossover appeal for those with an appreciation for dark barrel-aged spirits.
