The Missionary’s Downfall was first created by Donn Beach (or at least was created and served at his Hollywood restaurant) in the 1930s and was lost to time until Jeff Berry convinced an ex Beachcomber employee to give up the goods.
The drink’s name refers to Missionaries in Africa and Asia operating in Belgian, French, or British Colonies during WW2. Many of them were detained or expelled for the duration of the war if those nations were at odds with the colonists. This is a definite tip of the hat to Donn Beach’s own military experience. Beach served during WW2 operating Rest and Recreation centers for Battle Weary Officers. A fitting job for the guy who would go on to create restaurants and bars with recreation and rest as a major theme!
