An Alice In Wonderland themed drink? Possibly…
The Mad Hatter was first published by Ted Saucier in his book Bottoms Up published in 1951. Now this drink was published the same year as the Disney version of Alice in Wonderland. Now, here’s a little Mystery: Alice In Wonderland was published by author Lewis Carroll in 1865 and the Mad Hatter Character wasn’t actually called “The Mad Hatter” in the book. He’s referred as “The Hatter” and the Cheshire cat called him mad. Now I didn’t go over all 11 prior adaptations to see how the Hatter is named in each one, but if the Disney version was the first time he is referred to as “The Mad Hatter” then it’s quite a coincidence that this drink which appeared in a book in the same year is named “The Mad Hatter.” Now the term “Mad as a Hatter” definitely predated Carrol’s book, so it may not be too far fetched that Saucier could have thought it up independently but I doubt it. I think this is a reference to the Character in the book and as such I dressed the drink up accordingly! enjoy!
