Nobody knows who created this classic, but it has persisted and for very good reason: it’s goddamned delicious. Another great thing about this drink is that it’s very easy to make and features ingredients found in most home bars. Another good feature is that the Campari isn’t overwhelming and nicely balanced by the Cointreau. It is also very similar to the Gloria cocktail, with Lemon Twist as the difference.
This drink was named for a very famous French Fencer and Olympic athlete who won either gold or silver medals in every event he took part in. He took part in the 1920, 1924 and 1928 Olympics.
After retiring from sport he became a Journalist and became a co-owner the Le Films Sportifs company. He committed suicide in 1934 after his company went bankrupt.
