This cocktail was originally created for the Mr. Black contest but was unsuccessful. However, it recently achieved first place in the January 2022 /r/cocktails competition, where rum and chocolate were required ingredients. As one of the Jordan Field‘s earliest original creations, they consider it a standout. Inspired by the gritty experience of a night shift, the cocktail’s dark ingredients (black rum, Cynar, and Mr. Black) evoke the darkness of night. The coffee liqueur represents the necessary caffeine boost, while the bitterness of the coffee liqueur and Cynar reflects the shift’s less desirable aspects. Mole bitters add a spiced mocha flavor, and orange bitters accentuate the orange notes in the Cynar and garnish. A milder black rum introduces a smooth brown sugar flavor that complements the other ingredients. The resulting cocktail is a bittersweet, slightly dessert-like riff on a Manhattan. It’s ideal as an after-dinner drink, digestif, or nightcap, but caution is advised due to its potency.
