Few distilleries have as huge of a cult following as Garrison Brothers out of Hye, Texas does. Making Bourbon with a mash bill of 74% Corn, 15% Wheat, and 11% Malted Barley, Garrison is a little inherently sweeter I’ve found.
The Garrison Laguna Madre was supposed to release to general market this year, but instead they decided to release them as a donation to help raise money for Team Rubicon via their “Operation Crush COVID-19”. Only a few hundred bottles were released at $1000 donation each, and they were only available at the distillery. In 2021 Garrison has plans to re-release Laguna Madre, but make it available in broad market.
Tasting Notes
Appearance: Light maple syrup, with minimal, oily tears.
Nose: The sweeter notes of the barley and wheat shine through first followed by lots of mocha, and vanilla. The French oak doesn’t really stand out on the aromatics. It comes off like their regular small batch.
Flavour: Much spicier than most other GB. Part due to proof (50.5%) and in part due to the Limousin Oak barrels used for this release. This has notes reminiscent of candied ginger but not quite as intensely “gingery”, this is almost like ginger beer. Notes of dark chocolate, and spice from the french oak.
Overall: My sample must have oxidized because I tasted it in November and wrote this review in early December. It’s a delicious Bourbon (I am a bit biased in that I love almost all things Garrison) but I remember more WOW flavours the last time I had it. That being said I can’t wait until it’s available next year and I can try it again.
