This recipe first appears in Charles H. Baker’s “Gentleman’s Companion or Jigger, Beaker and flask: Drinking Around the world.”

Most known for his iconic cocktail books which have regained traction as cocktails have become increasingly popular, Charles H. Baker started his career as a Magazine Editor in New York City submitting stories to smaller publications. In 1932 he met and married Pauline Elizabeth Paulson who was the heiress to the Paulson Mining Fortune. They lived in coconut Grove Florida in a house Pauline built for them where they remained for 30 years.

Baker spent most of his career traveling the world chronicling food and drink for publications like Esquire, Gourmet and Town & Country. It was for the magazine Gourmet that he wrote a column called “Here’s How” and it was these recipes he collected into his two volume Set: The Gentleman’s Companion.
