Among Scotch whisky aficionados, Ardbeg is known for its high-quality, uncompromising approach to smoky, Islay whisky. The distillery’s annual Traigh Bhan release is aged in ex-bourbon and sherry casks for 19 years. For this batch, the distillery deliberately selected barrels that presented flavor notes of tropical fruit. Does the combination of briny peat smoke fit with tropical fruit? Find out below.
Tasting notes
The classic Ardbeg aromas of salty sea air and oily peat smoke are the first things I notice on the nose, but there is also a prominent sweetness reminiscent of mango or passion fruit as well. The best way to describe the palate overall is grilled pineapple. The smoke is still present, but there’s a juicy, sweet, caramelized fruit note as well. I even detect a bit of The mouthfeel is viscous and easily coats the tongue and palate. The finish is rich with notes of browned butter, sea salt, and a bit of caramel.
Final thoughts
Ardbeg Traigh Bhan Batch 5 is a really fun whisky. I doubt anyone would expect that flavors like mango and passion fruit are congruous with the classic peated Ardbeg profile, but this juxtaposition works for me. The palate in particular is incredibly reminiscent of fire-roasted pineapple and smoky passion fruit juice. I enjoyed this Traigh Bhan a bit more than some of Ardbeg’s recent special releases, but due to its uniqueness, it may not be for everyone.
